Adware: Are Your Business’s Computers Secure?

Adware, software dedicated to displaying advertising, can really slow down any business that depends on computers. Adware promoters use some cunning tricks to get you to install their software on your machine. Here’s what to look out for.

Adware is, by definition, something reasonable people don’t want on their computers. That’s why adware can’t just come out and ask people to install it. Often, the computer owner is completely unaware of it being installed. But not always.

When adware doesn’t want to sneak in through an open window, it will try to trick you into letting it in through the front door. Don’t think you could be tricked? Don’t be so sure until you’ve checked out these most common ways people have been tricked into allowing malware to be installed on their machines.

Adware Installation Trick 1: Piggybacking

How it works: malware may come bundled with a legitimate piece of software the user actually wants, such as a game or emoticon. The malware is merely labeled “companion software,” without any indication of what it will do.

How to fight it: the fact that adware so often comes bundled with “entertainment” software, most notably the file-swapping program Kazaa, is

Certified Organic vs Fair Trade Certified

The title of this article is disturbing. The concepts of Organic and Fair Trade are very important to building (rebuilding) a sustainable society. The good news is that the certifications are not mutually exclusive and actually complement each other nicely.

First, a word about certification. In our current market, third party certification is essential to both organic and fair trade. As the market for both fair trade and organic grows many businesses would rather change the definition than to change their practices. We are seeing this now in the fair trade coffee market place. As time goes on a search for fair trade coffee is more and more likely to turn up non-certified fair trade coffee, which is most likely just a marketing rouse to attract ethical customers. In a recent search of ebay for fair trade coffee 90% of the results were not third party certified, and upon further examination most looked very suspect. We have seen this already in the organic market. How many products marketed to organic consumers are actually certified? Companies have greened their names but not their practices. Without non-biased third party certification of organic or fair trade we are left to trust self

Carved Hiking Sticks – Make Your Own

What do you need to make your own hand carved hiking sticks? A pocket knife and a walk in the woods. Be sure your knife is solidly built. You don’t need more than a three-inch blade, but it needs to be strong enough that it won’t snap on you when you hit a knot in the wood. A locking blade is a good idea too, if you value your fingers.

What type of wood should you use? Any type you want, but be aware of the differences. Many people like hardwood hiking sticks because they can be very beautiful once polished up. That’s fine if you don’t mind the extra work it takes to carve hardwoods. Also be aware that they are heavy, better suited for decorating the cabin than for using on long hikes.

One of my favorite trees for carved hiking sticks is poplar. It’s light, and one of the easiest woods to work with. Young poplars often grow in over-crowded stands, so cutting a few out won’t hurt the forest. If you cut it in the spring or early summer, you can almost peel the bark off by hand.

Northern White Cedar is a much tougher [...] Continue Reading…

My Favorite Video Game

There are many fantastic games that have developed for the Sony Playstation, the Microsoft Xbox 360 and the Sony Playstation Portable. From realistic sports games to brilliant fantasy role-playing games to thrilling and intense military games, todays modern video games are so advanced, that its sometimes its hard to distinguish real life from the video game! Add to that fact that the music and soundtrack of todays video games are so well orchestrated, that they belong in a feature film or on your Apple iPod Nano, rather than just on a video game.

Turning A Trip Into An Experience

Dont underestimate the difference that staying in a boutique hotel can make to your next journey.

How often do you hear someone say, I cant wait to stay in the hotel? Discussions about forthcoming holidays nearly always centre on the things we want to do, or the places were looking forward to seeing, and the place where were staying doesnt feature at all. All that changes once youve booked into a boutique hotel.

These hotels have been lovingly created by their owners in order to offer you an experience. not just a place to stay. The belief that your holiday or business accommodation should be well designed and provide great service is one that has resulted in hundreds of boutique hotels opening up around the world, to cater for the increasing number of travellers who want to stay somewhere special.

Anticipation

Anticipating your holiday is one of the things we all love. In the weeks before we leave home, we get increasingly excited and really look forward to taking a break from our everyday lives and having new experiences. This anticipation can often be flattened when we reach the hotel, which turns out to be impersonal

Using A Factoring Service As Alternative Funding For Your Business

Cash on hand and flowing is the absolute bread and butter of any small and growing business. You need cash on hand to meet your payroll, fund development of the business, and even just for day to day function of the business. That flow of cash, though, can be a frustrating pursuit as customers rarely meet payables in time for you to pay all expenses. It is the nature of small business, but that doesnt make it any easier. One solution is using a factoring service as alternative funding for your expenses while waiting for invoices to be paid.

Using factoring service as alternative funding for your company is fairly simple to do. You essentially will be selling your accounts receivable from your customers by taking an advance on a percentage of the cash value of the invoice. Then, once the factoring company is paid, they will pay themselves back, take a fee, and return what is left to you.

When you chose to use a factoring service as alternative funding, you will also be able to have the cash on hand in a hurry. Most companies will give you 80% to 90% of the value of the

Getting Past Major Learning Barriers

Tom stepped into the meeting room, but from his perspective it might as well have been a jail cell. He was a prisoner in his own work day. Why? The PowerPoint slide projected on the screen said it all. Welcome to our Refresher Training. Refresher training might be needed for some people but Tom already knew all this material . . . but the training was mandatory. Besides, he had a desk full of more important work. He told himself how stupid this mandatory training policy was; that he hated to attend training on stuff he knew.

Marys supervisor asked her to attend the coaching skills training being provided by the company. The problem was that Mary wasnt a coach. She wasnt even a supervisor. She didnt see any value in attending this workshop. All she could think about was, What good is this going to be for me?

Kat was really excited about the workshop session she had registered for. It was on a topic she was interested in and wanted to learn more about. She saw how mastering these skills would help her reach her goals. She arrived early and sat close to the front. The problem

How Your “Unique Selling Proposition” (U.S.P) Can Make You Huge Profits.

What does your product, service or business do better than any other?

Why would someone want to purchase from you rather than your competition over at site x?

If you dont know, you need to find out!

Start by having a look at what you have to offer and compare it with the competition. Is yours as good, are their improvements that can be made? Maybe your product is similar to another but by asking the consumer how it could be improved you could do better, make changes, be in the forefront rather than lagging behind.

Amazingly enough, many products online (and off) no matter what they are sell better only for the fact that they have a few more features, more benefits, seem bigger, have more information, a few extra testimonials.

Does this mean that the consumer really needs all these extra items, in many cases the answer is no! But the consumer thinks they are more valuable only for the fact that they are getting more even if the price is higher.

If you are selling a service, how do you do it differently and better than any other? This may not always be additional add-on products

Surviving the RFP: How to answer the how will you work with us question

The very survival of your agency rests in your success in winning new business. Yet everyone hates receiving RFPs.

Why? Because they require a huge investment in time and energy and most often you dont make the first cut, let alone win the business. After all, every agency will claim superior strategic thinking and more powerful creative claims that are very difficult to substantiate without actually showing your work to the prospective client.

So you wallow in frustration that the decision will be made based on totally subjective judgments by people you never met.

There is hope.

One of the best ways to strengthen your answer to an RFP is to offer a clear, objective point of differentiation.

All clients are interested in how you will work with them. If you show them your client service extranet, they will not only see your commitment to client service, they will see precisely how you plan to organize their work. Put in their logo. Build folders structures that support precisely how you will organize everything for them. And tell them how much time they will save working with you, rather than with the other agencies mired in the stone

How to Reinvent Your Business in 7 Easy Steps

Copyright 2006 Donna Gunter

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to start all over again in your business and your life, knowing what you know now, but with a completely clean slate? I’ve often fantasized about going back to specific points in my life, armed with my current personal experience, learning and wisdom, and thinking how differently I might handle situations during those crucial life moments if I knew then what I know now.

I’ve been self-employed now for 7 years, and the business I started back in 1999 is no longer the business that I run. I’ve found that is often the case with many entrepreneurs. You grow, change, develop, and as your life changes, or as market conditions change, so does your business. Or, after attaining what you think you wanted, you may find that it no longer suits you.

I’ve been giving much thought to the state of my business lately. Two years ago what I thought I wanted was a very small virtual assistant practice and a growing coaching practice. After having attained that, I had a bigger “a-ha!” that I’m very tired of trading time for dollars. This is how most

Using The Web To Jump-Start Your Business

The U.S. Small Business Administration estimates that more than 580,000 small businesses will start up this year. Unfortunately, about 576,000 small businesses will fail during that same time period. So how can entrepreneurs hedge the odds in their favor? One way is to start a Web-based business or take your current business online.

Internet businesses sell merchandise, services, information and most anything a traditional brick-and-mortar business can sell-but often with a smaller operating cost because they only conduct business online. Brandon Lewis, president of StoresOnline, offers these tips to help online entrepreneurs make the most out of their companies:

Know Your Audience

A common online marketing mistake is to try to target too many audiences. There are 938 million users on the Internet. Marketing to all of those eyeballs is simply not effective and can be very costly. If your target customer group is women ages 14-27, it does you no good to spend time and money marketing your site to men ages 55-90. Take the time to find your customer and then customize your approach to people who actually search for and therefore want to buy your product or service.
